Review: The Amazing Bubble Show

The Deception Bay Community Hall was a great choice for a number of special ticketed events held over the opening weekend of the Anywhere Festival Moreton Bay. The first show of the day was Magic Glen’s Bubble Show. A kid-friendly 45-minute event that is exactly what you'd expect from the title... and a little bit more.

Magic Glen (Glen Rhodes) is an experienced magician, who is equally at home when taking to the stage at the comedy club and when working as a kids' entertainer. Within 5 minutes of walking onto the quiet stage, Magic Glenn had the kids in the room dancing about and trying to 'keep those bubbles alive.' And had the parents and grandparents in the room smiling and laughing at the antics of their kids, and admiring the various unusual combination of bubbles with smoke and even fire. During the 45-minute set there was ample opportunity for several kids to take to the stage to assist Magic Glen as he created bubble hair and even surrounded kids with bubble rainbows and bubble 'snakes.'

It was fascinating to see just quite how many different bubble combinations could be created, with the crowd-pleasing smoke bubbles and volcano flame being definite highlights—and the closing ‘children in big bubble’ pieces being a great way to end the fun. I was also impressed with the tips for parents as to how some bubbles could be created at home by simply combining dishwashing liquid with straws.

By the end of the set there were adults volunteering to be part of the action, every child that wanted to participate had been onto the stage, and Magic Glen was answering questions as to when the next Anywhere Festival show was scheduled. The important answer to that question is that the shows ‘for kids’ are at the Hills District Community Centre (17 May), and the North Lakes Community Centre (18 May). If the family budget allows, I strongly recommend booking to also see the 11:30am Jaws: For Kids!  show…all tickets only $10).

I gather Magic Glen is also available for kid's parties... Probably ideal for groups of kids up to age 10, as a great way to burn off some of that celebratory sugar and allow the adults some time to also relax and have fun.
