Review: Circus Mixtape

Flipside CircusCircus Mixtape was a fantastic addition to the 2023 Brisbane City Council Lord Mayor’s Children’s program for Brisbane Festival. A joyful and often quite amazing 50 minutes of spectacular circus, presented by the Flipside performance troupe.

As always, it’s difficult to believe that all of the performers are under 18, with some as young as 10. The scene setting opening was a charming comic performance by the young artist who cleverly drew the attention of the capacity audience, and started a run through of possible tunes for the show. And then we were treated to a sequence of numbers that included trapeze, silks, amazing see-saw jumps, towers, tumbles, lifts and incredible aerial rope.

Flipside Circus runs classes for all abilities, and ages, so I hope that this new show will have inspired a few more kids to take up the offer of a free trial lesson, and perhaps even to ‘get the circus bug.’ And I am sure that adding the Lord Mayor’s program into the 2023 Brisbane Festival mix will have ensured that a few more residents know to keep an eye out for future free events in the regular City Hall programming.

Verdict: Another Flipside Circus success; impressive and highly professional circus skills, set to a an upbeat playlist.
