Review: Abba Girls Tribute Show
Sadly, Abba’s Agnetha and Frida were not available to perform outside a Yeronga warehouse on Friday night. Which was a not a problem for a very enthusiastic audience, as the Abba Girls Tribute Show delighted everyone with a night of disco, ‘nostalgia replica costumes, infectious beats, and timeless classics.’ As promised, many in the audience were dancing in the aisles, reliving memories of Abba concerts and Mamma Mia! film nights—and everyone swayed along with the numbers and lit up the night with their phones.
As with every good tribute group, the duo picked a selection of the greatest and most loved hits that their heroines are known for. Their crowd interaction was well-judged (charming pseudo-Swedish accents), the soundtrack worked well, and the dance moves reminded us all of Abba’s most well-known pop videos. The one-hour, crowd-pleasing set included ‘Voulez-Vous,’ ‘Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!,’ ‘Super Trouper’ (fabulous harmonies), ‘Honey Honey,’ ‘SOS’ (so very much better that the film version…), ‘Chiquitita,’ ‘I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do,’ ‘Waterloo’ (loved it!), ‘Mamma Mia,’ ‘Ring Ring,’ ‘Lay All Your Love On Me,’ ‘Fernando’ (lighting up the night sky with those torches), ‘Money, Money, Money,’ an excellent ‘Take A Chance,’ ‘Thank You For The Music’ (more great harmonies), ‘Dancing Queen,’ and more.
The one night only Abba Girls Tribute Show was a great addition to the Anywhere Festival program, and I can see why this duo is kept busy with bookings for fundraisers, parties, and corporate events. If you missed this show, check out their website which includes forthcoming Brisbane and Gold Coast dates.
