Review: The Elemental Being

The Elemental Being is promoted as ‘a circus-inspired movement production exploring the interconnected nature of fire, water, earth, air and aether.’ Congratulations to the Pixie Dust Productions performers and creatives, and to their Elements Pole & Aerial production partners, on crafting this new show as a showcase of the skill and passion of the students and of their teacher.

Elemental Beings are often defined as the guardians of nature and as joyous beings who exist within the elemental reals or dimensions of the forces of earth air, fire and water—sometimes with the addition of the fifth element of aether (in medieval science defined as the material that fills the region beyond the terrestrial). The Elemental Being has clear sections that each reference the various dimensions, before the forces begin to interweave to reveal a harmonious connection and whole. The show provides a platform for new and experienced students to take to the stage and demonstrate their acrobatic, dance, trapeze, silks and pole skills. The students range in age and therefore also vary in skill level and style, but each performer participates in the show with great style, professionalism and confidence.

It is perhaps unfair to come away with favourite aspects or moments from any show, as I am sure that every member of the sold-out premiere audience will have ‘chapters’ that they found to be particularly memorable. For me there are three key memories. Firstly, the great use of the different props. The rhythmic twirling and use of the ‘balls’ in place of fire poi was impressive, and a fabulous contribution to the ‘flames’ and moves to communicate the opening ‘fire’ movement. And I loved the amusing and quirky dance moves with the paper umbrellas, that conveyed a real sense of the ebb and flow of air and breath. Secondly, the use of music, fabric, dance, and light to produce a visually dynamic experience. Finally, the aerial movements interwoven throughout the show were often quite special—with excellent pole duets (synchronised on one pole, and on two poles), impressive work on silks, lyrical trapeze, and a fabulous movement that featured powerful lyra work.

The Elemental Being is presented by Pixie Dust Productions in partnership with Elements Pole & Aerial. Established in 2009, Elements Pole & Aerial offers classes in Lyra, Silks, Chains, Pole Dance, Aerial Yoga, Strength, Burlesque, Trapeze, Hammock, and more. I am guessing that hosting this show might mean that they attract new and experienced members of The Elemental Being audience to join them.

Congratulations to the Moreton Bay students, and to their teachers and families on this artistic and family-friendly demonstration of the skills of the pupils and of their instructors.
